AI medicine in a smartphone: breathing coach thanks to camera analysis
The health tech start-up Quantiq presented an AI-supported breathing app at CES 2025. "Zenbox" transforms the smartphone into a medical measuring device that records precise breathing exercises and their effects on health in real time.
The technological basis is the clinically validated Cobox technology, which uses remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) and artificial intelligence to use the smartphone camera to measure vital signs by analyzing light variations under the skin of the face. The system has been validated in four hospitals and achieves a measurement accuracy that is said to be comparable to conventional medical devices.
Gamification as part of the therapy
The therapeutic approach is particularly noteworthy: Zenbox acts like a digital physiotherapist that analyses, corrects and personalizes breathing exercises in real time. Clinical studies show an average stress reduction of 25% and anxiety reduction of 40% with regular use. The app makes use of gamification elements to increase motivation to perform the exercises regularly.
It has already proven itself in practice at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where eleven Paralympic athletes used the technology. In addition to the consumer version, Quantiq is also targeting the professional healthcare sector: the app is to be used in hospitals, laboratories and clinics and will also be offered to HR management departments and health insurance companies.
