Track Keynote: TSN as the key enabler for converged networks: Current status and challenges (Monday, 01 March 2021, 13:30 - 14:00)
The emerging digitalization across industries has a significant impact on the requirements of communication systems. The typical combination of standard IT and proprietary real-time systems often does not allow for the integration of innovative solutions. Instead, converged communication systems, combining the connectivity and flexibility of IT systems and the deterministic guarantees of OT systems are required. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is accepted as the key enabling technology for future converged real-time networks across industries: from industrial automation to automotive to data centers. Even though an increasing number of standards are being published, real-world deployments are rare. A key reason for this is that TSN itself can only be a part of a solution and further standards are required to create an interoperable eco-system up to the application layer. Numerous initiatives are working on solutions, nevertheless, there are still major challenges ahead. The presentation will review the current status of the TSN standards themselves, while also looking at the big picture and related standards and activities, including profiles, higher layer protocols and other base technologies. Key challenges of TSN and its usage in different industries and especially complimentary standards to create eco-systems will also be discussed. In addition to the status and challenges, the presentation will also help to understand where opportunities are and when it might be the best time to get started depending on your own business.
