AmCham Germany wants to set an example, since female founders are still the minority in the start-up ecosystem on both sides of the Atlantic. For this reason, two successful female founders are being sought, who are to be awarded as positive role models. The award combines American entrepreneurial spirit and German entrepreneurship with the activities of AmCham Germany in the areas of entrepreneurship and diversity in leadership.

Applications for the Female Founders Award can be submitted until November 3. The award will be presented by AmCham Germany in Berlin on December 4, 2019.

According to the Female Founders Monitor 2019 of the Bundesverband Deutsche Startups, only 15 percent of the founders in Germany are female. The study also shows that women are more motivated by social and societal issues. »The image of entrepreneurial spirit and entrepreneurship is often still male,« explains Eveline Metzen, Managing Director of AmCham Germany: »This is why we want to give successful female entrepreneurs greater visibility and create new role models.«

Berlin in particular is considered a good location for the start-up scene. According to Torsten Oltmanns, Chair of the Berlin Chapter of AmCham Germany and Partner at Roland Berger, the German capital offers »many opportunities for female entrepreneurs«. »That's why we focus on female entrepreneurs and look for their innovative and successful business models,« says Oltmanns, who is also a member of the Awards jury.

Other jury members are Nadine Bütow, Managing Director of CommsArt and member of the Berlin team of Digital Media Women, Maria Gross, Managing Director at Germantech, Carolin Schäufele, CEO & Managing Editor of »SHE works!«, Andreas Schwaiger, Managing Director Germany at Texas Instruments Germany and Edith Stier-Thompson, Managing Director at news aktuell.

The jury will evaluate the applications according to the following selection criteria:

  •     (Co)founder of a start-up (innovative technology or business model)
  •     The start-up has already been successful on the market for two to three years (no longer than ten years).
  •     The success is reflected in the number of customers/users and the visibility of the company
