The semiconductor industry in Saxony is growing and employs more and more people, according to the industry association Silicon Saxony. "Since 2012, the number of jobs has risen continuously," Robert Weichert of the Silicon Saxony industry association said to the German Press Agency. According to the latest figures from 2016, around 26,000 people were employed in the semiconductor industry – in 2012 the figure was around 21,000. The microchips produced there are used, for example, for computers, smartphones or in cars. Saxony is one of the largest microelectronics locations in Europe.

Despite individual job cuts announced since 2012, as at chip manufacturer Globalfoundries in October 2015, at the bottom line, there was a continuous, slight growth in the semiconductor industry, Weichert continued.

This Tuesday, around 300 representatives from industry, business and science will meet in Dresden for the 13th "Silicon Saxony Day". The industry meeting will be about the Internet of Things, where products and objects can exchange information with each other. This is increasingly changing industrial production.
