LITILIT Secures 8 Million Euro for Modular Femtosecond Laser System

Femtosecond laser manufacturer LITILIT has received an 8 million euro loan from the Lithuanian National Development Bank ILTE to develop a modular femtosecond laser system called FEMODA.

The project is designed to accelerate the adoption of advanced lasers and open the door to new industrial applications. With the company investing an additional €2 million of its own capital, the total project value reaches €10 million. Commercialization of the new technology is planned for the second half of 2029.

Expanding beyond high-value small parts

According to CEO and co-founder Nikolajus Gavrilinas, femtosecond lasers today are used mainly in manufacturing high-value small parts. FEMODA is intended to change that by enabling applications in existing large-scale industries – including the mass production of metal tools and specialized coatings on large surfaces such as aircraft or car bodies. The system is also expected to speed up established femtosecond laser applications ranging from consumer electronics to displays and chips.

Femtosecond lasers rely on extremely short pulses to process materials without damaging surrounding structures – a property known as cold ablation. This makes them essential for applications spanning eye surgery, vascular stents, and the manufacturing of computer chips and display screens.

Reducing infrastructure complexity

Gavrilinas points to heavy infrastructure, installation, and maintenance requirements as key barriers limiting broader adoption of femtosecond laser systems. Most existing systems rely on water cooling, which requires dedicated circulation and cleaning systems with regular upkeep. They also depend on large, heavy optical modules mounted on massive optical bases, together with sensitive optics for beam delivery, and typically require a stable-temperature environment.

FEMODA aims to address these constraints by combining control electronics, optics, and cooling into a single industrial unit designed for easy integration into any factory. The modular platform is intended to be less sensitive to temperature, humidity, and vibration. Individual modules can be combined into more powerful configurations, and if one module fails, only that component needs to be replaced rather than the entire system.

Up to 1000 W across multiple beam channels

FEMODA is targeting an average optical power of up to 1000 W, split across 10 to 20 separate beam channels. Each channel is designed to deliver femtosecond pulses to a different processing point on a production line – a configuration Gavrilinas describes as one of the most powerful modular industrial systems in the sector.

LITILIT began developing the project in 2024. FEMODA forms part of the company's broader goal of making femtosecond laser systems scalable, addressing what it identifies as one of the industry's biggest adoption barriers: the lack of a way to produce high-power femtosecond laser systems at scale, given the manufacturing complexity of most traditional systems.

New high-capacity laser factory in Vilnius

To close this scalability gap, LITILIT started developing a new high-capacity laser factory in Vilnius in June, which is scheduled to begin operating this fall with a target output of 3,000 femtosecond lasers per year.

LITILIT's laser systems are built on several patented technologies developed by co-founders Kęstutis Regelskis, Nerijus Rusteika, and Gavrilinas, in close collaboration with the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) in Vilnius.
