Wanted: Embedded software developers

Reality check: the demand for software and embedded software developers remained quite constant during last year despite Corona, says Katharina Hain from the personnel services provider Hays. Hays places engineers in permanent positions as well as, for the most part, in temporary employment and as freelancers.

According to Hays' own Skilled Workers Index for the 4th quarter of 2020, an evaluation of the most important print and online job markets, the demand for development engineers has recently increased again. In the embedded software sector, the only »small slump in demand« came in March 2020 during the first lockdown, but demand then »rose again month by month,« according to Hain, »including the usual slight seasonal fluctuations.« By the second, harder lockdown in November, however, there was no second dip in demand, he said. Especially in March and November, however, employment readiness shifted slightly in favor of freelancers rather than temporary workers, »about 60% to 40%,« Hain said. »January has also suggested a slight trend toward freelancers so far,« Hain said.

Personnel consultants have their work cut out when it comes to finding embedded specialists for their clients. The labor market for embedded engineers is »good, and demand is stable at a good to high level,« explains HR consultant Thomas Hegger of Hegger, Riemann & Partner. Due to Corona, companies postponed their spring and summer hiring plans in 2020, but advertised jobs again starting in the fall. And »there were even some industries that continued to hire even during the height of the crisis.« While staff planning for 2021 is broadly still very cautious, »we're hearing from numerous companies that staff budgets for 2021 are already being adjusted upward as deferred projects are brought forward.«
