Complete hydrogen solutions provider Plug Power is supplying Arcadia eFuels with a 280 MW electrolyser system with proton exchange membrane (PEM). The electrolyser will be used at Arcadia's plant in Vordingborg, Denmark, to produce sustainable aviation fuel.
Arcadia eFuels' Vordingborg site is already harnessing Denmark's abundant wind energy and will produce around 120 tonnes of green hydrogen per day using Plug Power's electrolyser technology. The green hydrogen will then be combined with biogenic CO2 to produce synthesis gas.
Further processing of this syngas will produce a carbon-neutral, sustainable aviation fuel that meets RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) requirements and therefore European mandates for aviation fuel. Arcadia eFuels expects commercial operation towards the end of 2026.
The demand for sustainable aviation fuel will continue to increase due to the requirements of the European Commission. By 2050, 70 per cent of fuel consumption at EU airports is to be covered by sustainable aviation fuel, with the first mandates starting as early as 2025.
