Automotive supplier Hella has been commissioned with the world's first large-volume production of a completely electric brake pedal sensor. Unlike conventional braking systems, brake-by-wire technology transmits braking commands exclusively electrically.
The first large-volume series production is expected to start in Hella's European production network in 2025. The initial supplier will be a German car manufacturer. Development of the electric brake pedal sensor is taking place at Hella's corporate headquarters in Lippstadt.
The brake-by-wire pedal simulates the feel and behavior of a conventional brake system in which the pedal is mechanically connected to the brake system via a rod. Since the control of the brake commands in Hella's by-wire solution is only fully electric, functionalities of automated driving are supported. In addition, customer-specific adjustment of the braking function is made possible, in which the braking force can be specifically adapted depending on the driving scenario.
Since only lightweight plastics are used in the all-electric brake-by-wire pedal, the component weight can be reduced by up to 20 percent. This can help increase the range of electric cars and reduce CO2 emissions of vehicles with internal combustion engines or hybrid drives while maintaining high performance and functional safety. In addition, installation costs as well as variant diversity are reduced.
»Hella has been one of the world's leading suppliers in the field of pedal sensors for more than two decades. Building on this, we have now set another technological milestone with our brake-by-wire solution, which will become the standard in all vehicle segments in just a few years,« says Björn Twiehaus, who is responsible for the global electronics business in Hella's Management Board.
With the new brake-by-wire technology, Hella is also pushing ahead with the development of the »Cockpit of the Future« - one of the central trend topics that Hella and Faurecia are jointly addressing under the umbrella of the Forvia Group.
»With our by-wire technology, many bulky hardware components are eliminated. The brake rod, for example, has always been a neuralgic point of vehicle design,« says Electronics Managing Director Björn Twiehaus. »With our brake-by-wire pedal, we are now resolving this aspect and thus creating completely new possibilities for making the vehicle interior highly flexible. The all-electric brake pedal therefore not only makes an indispensable contribution to the Cockpit of the Future. Together with Faurecia's display and interior solutions and our lighting and electronics expertise, we are strengthening our approach as a systems provider in this future field.«
