Which strategies are you pursuing in the medical connectors market?
Omnetics’ strategy is to offer constant quality and reliability of our existing standard devices that have proven of use to the medical industry. We are rapidly expanding a medical design service by focusing on rapid design of connectors that are application specific. Often designers will chose a current standard connector and after some prototype design work, ask if they can change the design to fit within a structure required for their medical instrument, catheter handle or a probe.
Secondly, Omnetics is pioneering hybrid and custom designed miniature connectors combining mixed technologies within one cable and connector. A designer can ask for a mix of power pins, digital signal processing pins and an adjoining rf coax or even a fibre connection within one single connector. This greatly reduces the number of wiring within the surgery room or going to medical instruments.
How is Omnetics’ current portfolio of medical connectors composed?
Omnetics begins with a standard line of ruggedized Micro and Nano sized connectors that have been tested and used throughout the medical industry. It has included soft overmolded connector shells and cable wiring to ensure limpness and good look and feel to the patients exposed to the connectors. It expands from the standards to “application specific” designs aimed directly at how the cable will be used and what it is exposed to. This custom service is standard at Omnetics.
Where does Omnetics differ from your competition?
Omnetics differs from our competitors in that we offer face to face services whenever asked and will include design engineers to assist the medical instrument designer.
Mr Stanton, you have been Director of Technology at Omnetics for 15 years. How did you experience the company when you started, and how has it developed since then?
Omnetics was quite small 15 years ago and operated like a family in business together. Since that time Omnetics has grown steadily each year and continued a family environment as well as remained an employee owned business. Key additions included expanding the design engineering staff and employing solid model technology. This initiated a quiet revolution in designs as well as drove the disciplines to offer full military specification reliability and compliance products. Now the company is highly disciplined in Quality Standard control as well as controlling materials and designs to always offer miniature connectors that meet the rugged reliability with the technology needed by each application.
And where do you see Omnetics in 5 years’ time?
Constant and steady growth with focus on quality and high signal integrity. Focus will include coax and fibre within the same connectors. More shielding and EMI protection of signals within the cable. Omnetics is becoming a company known for being deeply involved in specific technologies and knowing how to support the interconnections of medical designs.
Omnetics will be known for faster delivery of specialty items and will be more and more included in custom designs with and within the medical companies it serves. There appears to be a trend in offering design intelligence in the interconnection industry that goes beyond offering standard designs from a cupboard of established connectors. Omnetics will be one of those new Design Services companies.
