In view of the increasing danger of coronavirus infection, Zollner Elektronik, Europe's largest contract manufacturer, is implementing an emergency plan.
After a first suspected case of corona among the employees, which has meanwhile been proven to be unfounded, Zollner Elektronik AG intensifies its emergency measures. The preventive components of the emergency plan particularly concern the main plant in Zandt. The factory premises there are divided into seven zones. Employees in different zones have only minimal direct personal contact with each other. This precautionary measure, which will be implemented from 16.3.2020, is intended to reduce the health risk for the employees in Zandt to a maximum and at the same time to maintain business operations there as best as possible in the event of an emergency.
Johann Weber, CEO of Zollner, says: "The current situation is a double challenge for us. We feel obliged to our customers and would like to fulfil the agreements with them as well as possible. At the same time we have a responsibility for our employees. Their health is our top priority. With the emergency plan and especially the zone concept in Zandt we try to reconcile both."
Experience from suspected case in Neukirchen
As a precautionary measure, the Neukirchen bei Heiligen Blut plant had not started operations at the beginning of the week because one employee was considered to be a first-degree contact of a person who had tested positive. After a list of his contact persons had been compiled and the plant had been thoroughly cleaned in accordance with the specifications of the responsible health authority, the Neukirchen site was able to resume operations after three days. The test of the employee has since shown that he is not infected.
The preventive closure of the Neukirchen plant has shown that Zollner's emergency plans are effective in an emergency. Zollner has used the experience gained in Neukirchen to further optimize the procedure in case of a corona case among the employees: Should it be necessary, the national or international location or the affected zone in the main plant in Zandt will be closed for about two days. This is how long it takes to carry out the intensive cleaning and compile the list of contact persons. These contact persons stay away from their workplace for the duration of the incubation period and work in the home office as far as possible.
