The joint venture between the Volkswagen Group and the Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt is picking up speed: Volkswagen will construct the buildings and infrastructure of the joint lithium-ion battery cell factory »Northvolt Zwei«.
The investment that Volkswagen is making in the Fab is expected to amount to around 450 million euros. The plant will then be leased by the joint venture. The production of battery cells is scheduled to start there at the beginning of 2024, with an initial production capacity of 16 GWh.
VW and Northvolt founded a joint venture in September 2019 to prepare the series production of lithium-ion batteries in Germany. The decision that Volkswagen should build the plant represents the next strategic decision. The construction project at the Salzgitter site is scheduled to start this year.
»Battery cell production in Salzgitter is an important step in the transformation to electromobility,« says Thomas Schmall, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components. »With the battery cell production facility and the Center of Excellence Battery Cell, we are bundling competencies at the Salzgitter location and thus advancing the further development of battery cells, developing new standards and being able to transfer them directly into production«.
