Due to a lack of prospects on the hydrogen market, Stellantis is discontinuing its development programme for hydrogen fuel cell technology. This also marks the end of the planned series production of hydrogen-powered Pro-One vans in Hordain, France, and Gliwice, Poland.
Due to the limited availability of hydrogen refuelling station infrastructure, high capital requirements and the need for stronger consumer incentives, Stellantis does not expect hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles to become widespread before the end of the decade.
As a result, Stellantis will not be launching its new range of hydrogen-powered Pro-One vehicles this year. Series production was due to start this summer in Hordain, France (medium-sized vans) and Gliwice, Poland (large vans).
»The hydrogen market remains a niche segment with no prospects of economic sustainability in the medium term. We must make clear and responsible decisions to ensure our competitiveness and fulfil our customers' expectations with our offensive in electric and hybrid passenger and light commercial vehicles,« comments Jean-Philippe Imparato, Chief Operating Officer for Enlarged Europe.
According to Stellantis, the decision taken will not affect staff at the production sites. R&D activities related to hydrogen technology will be redirected to other projects.
The current situation in the hydrogen segment also poses financial challenges for various stakeholders. In this context, Stellantis has initiated discussions with Symbio's shareholders to assess the current market impact and to safeguard Symbio's interests in line with its various commitments.
