It is available from the distributor Farnell for about 18 euros and can only be used as a mainboard with the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. With the PoE HAT, the Raspberry Pi can be powered via an Ethernet cable; a separate power supply is not required. This offers a good solution for embedded and IoT projects. The PoE HAT comes with a small fan controlled by the Raspberry Pi via I2C. The fan should turn itself on and off automatically, depending on the temperature of the main processor on the mainboard.

No modifications are required on the Pi 3 Model B+ motherboard to use the PoE HAT; it only has to be plugged in. However, the software on the motherboard should be up to date.  In addition to the Raspberry Pi motherboard, an Ethernet cable is required. Neither is included in the delivery of the HAT.

The features of the new HAT at a glance:

  • Compliant with Power over Ethernet 802.3af
  • Class 2 device
  • Fully insulated switching power supply
  • Input voltage: 36-56V
  • Output voltage: 5V
  • Provides up to 2.5A
  • Fan control
  • Plug-and-play compatibility with Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+
