Kontron is expanding its »PiXtend« programmable logic control to PiXtend Pi 4 based on the Raspberry Pi 4. This expansion is due to the new Broadcom BCM2711 processor with quad-core Arm Cortex A72 core with 1.5 GHz and 8 GB RAM, which enables the PLC to achieve better performance than previous models. The main field of application of the electronic controller based on Raspberry Pi is mainly in appliance and machine manufacturing.

PiXtend Pi 4 also offers a Gigabit Ethernet interface and ensures a higher, interference-free data transfer rate. In addition, the single-board computer offers two micro HDMI ports ready for transferring audio and video data – up to 4Kp30. Besides two USB 2.0 ports, there are two additional USB 3.0 ports that transfer data up to ten times faster. In order to fully utilize the processor's maximum operating speed of 1.5 GHz, a passive heat sink is built into the aluminum casing.

PiXtend can be programmed in common programming languages such as C or Python and is suitable for use with Codesys. The modules can also be expanded with »PiXtend eIO«, an I/O system for digital and analog sensors and actuators that can be connected via Modbus. Simple wiring directly in the device or in the control cabinet is facilitated by industry-compatible connection technology. All control assemblies and modules are available in a Basic or Pro variant as a complete device with DIN rail housing. Samples of the PiXtend Pi 4 are already available.
