In the new year, Kontron is focusing its corporate strategy entirely on its IoT portfolio and wants to further expand its position as an IoT and Industry 4.0 specialist. For this reason, the Group has sold the majority of its IT services business to VINCI Energies in 2022 - an information and communications technology group operating globally through its Axians brand.

The company also wants to present itself with a new brand identity and thus a new brand presence. The rebranding unifies the Kontron brands and bundles all collaborations and competencies of the business units in the areas of IoT, software and 5G. Kontron hereby offers IoT applications for many different markets, including industrial automation, medical technology, transportation, communication and smart energy. Kontron is targeting an increase in sales to 2 billion euros in the IoT area by 2025.

The excellent volume of orders confirms the new group strategy. Most recently, Kontron was awarded a contract to implement a solution from a European Union state for the secure identification and authentication of people. The EUR 89 million contract involves handing out the latest generation of secure ID documents. The contracts were signed at the end of December and the project has already started.

Major project in Africa

The Group also announced that it had won a lucrative major project: Kontron Transportation will provide the railroad radio technology - the Global System for Mobile Communications for Railways (GSM-R) – for Siemens Mobility's »Egypt High Speed Rail Project«. The project is expected to mark the beginning of a new era for the railroad system in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East and is one of Kontron Transportation's largest projects. The new electrified train network is expected to connect 60 cities across the country with a 2,000-kilometer state-of-the-art high-speed network.

Kontron Transportation is supplying the latest technology for railroad radio communications for the project, which is fully compliant with the International Union of Railways (UIC) railroad standard. It is based on a cyber-secured IP portfolio that will pave the way to next-generation 5G FRMCS and ensure a smooth transition from GSM-R to Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). Kontron Transportation's GSM-R technology will be deployed on three routes. The first connects the port cities of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea with Marsa Matrouh and Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea. The second runs between Cairo and Abu Simbel, and the third connects Luxor to Hurghada via Safaga, linking millions of people and providing access to urban infrastructure, including health and education. Hereby, the project contributes to global initiatives to combat carbon emissions. Kontron Transportation brings its extensive GSM-R and FRMCS experience and credibility, which includes 15 years of lifecycle management in delivery and maintenance.
