GKN Automotive is introducing a plug-and-play eDrive concept. With the new drive unit, the company is meeting the growing demand from niche suppliers and converters who want to equip their vehicles with an electric drive.
The new eCrate concept is based on GKN Automotive's 20 years of experience in the field of electric drives. The aim of the concept was to develop a modular electric drive system with optimum efficiency and performance. Market-proven technology was to be accommodated in a standard format to guarantee optimum cost efficiency.
GKN Automotive has designed three different eCrate plug-and-play systems: Depending on the application and demand, customers will be able to choose a variant as early as the beginning of 2025.
The eCrate concept will be offered either as a 2-in-1 combination system (engine and transmission) with an output of 113 kW or as a fully integrated 3-in-1 system. The 3-in-1 system includes the motor, transmission and an inverter and will be available with an output of 113 kW or 185 kW.
The eCrate concept addresses the growing number of low-volume EV suppliers as well as aftermarket and conversion companies specializing in restomodding and retro-conversions. At the same time, it acts as a trial balloon and is designed to test the demand for such modular pre-assembled drive units in the market.
The eCrate drive unit can be fitted to small to large passenger cars as well as light commercial vehicles. In addition, the concept can accelerate the transition to full electrification, as eCrate provides startups as well as established suppliers with a stand-alone plug-and-play solution.
»For 20 years, we have been developing leading eDrive technologies for global vehicle manufacturers, driving the electric drive revolution,« emphasizes Dirk Kesselgruber, Chief Technology Officer at GKN Automotive. »Our new eCrate concept makes our technology accessible to even more customers looking for high-quality and cost-effective plug-and-play electric drive units. By introducing innovative and sustainable solutions, we are helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable world.«
GKN Automotive will showcase the eCrate drive concept at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
