With the X20, Mahle Smart Bike Systems is launching the lightest drive system for e-bikes on the market. The system weighs just 3.2 kg - including the battery. The e-bike division of the automotive supplier is thus setting a new benchmark for the weight/performance ratio.

The X20 drive system also scores visually, as it is invisibly installed in the frame and hub. In addition, artificial intelligence enables a customizable driving experience that is perfectly tailored to the rider. The new drive will be available from April 20, 2022.
The Mahle X20 motor weighs just 1.4 kilograms. It is perfectly tailored to the design of gravel bikes and urban e-bikes and can be disconnected from the system with a click. Thus, the rear wheel can be easily disassembled without expertise or special tools. The hub motor delivers 23 Nm directly to the wheel - this power is comparable in operation with a mid-motor with 55 Nm torque.

A sophisticated sensor package measures acceleration, speed, torque, temperature and cadence in the X20 and continuously adapts the drive ideally to the person in the saddle using artificial intelligence. It thus offers a perfectly tuned riding experience - even when the rider or training condition changes.

The drive system impresses with a natural pedal feel similar to that of a classic high-performance sports bike and delivers noise-free support. Communication between rider and vehicle takes place via a contemporary HMI with haptic feedback.

Doubling the range with a range extender

The two available iX250 and iX350 batteries provide sufficient energy. They can be charged quickly with the Mahle Active Charger: 80 percent charge level can be achieved within one hour. If more range is required, an optional range extender can be used. This almost doubles the range, weighs only 1 kg and is shaped like a drinking bottle that is attached to the frame. This additional battery can also be used as a power bank via a docking station to charge laptops or cell phones on the go.

»With the X20, we are opening a completely new chapter, combining weight advantage, aesthetics, and individualization in an unprecedented drive solution,« says Jochen Sommer, Head of Mahle Smart Bike Systems.

»The X20 gives riders exactly the support that is needed individually in each case and thus stands for the ultimate riding experience,« adds Marco de la Serna, Head of Strategy and Business Development at MAHLE Smart Bike Systems.
