Magna has received a major order from a premium European-based OEM to supply its new eDrive system (eDS Mid). The eDrive system is planned for SUV/sedan models of 2027, with production expected to start in 2026.
Magna's eDS Mid is a compact, high-speed electric motor that offers a scalable power range from 100 kW to 140 kW and is optimised for 800 V. As a high-voltage electric drive system for electric AWD applications, it enables fast engagement through a new decoupling system and delivers a highly efficient silicon carbide-based inverter designed to contribute to industry-leading efficiency, drivability and safety.
The high-voltage drive system also delivers up to 2,000 Nm of torque and weighs under 72 kg, resulting in a lower overall weight and volume compared to other products available on the market.
Production of the eDrive system is to take place at Magna's two carbon-neutral plants in Kechnec (Slovakia) and Lannach (Austria), according to Magna.
»The electrified drive technologies of the future are already being developed today. We are rising to the challenge of innovating and bringing scalable technology solutions to market that our customers need,« said Diba Ilunga, President Magna Powertrain. »This new business marks an important milestone in our electrification strategy as we continue to consistently pursue new innovations and solutions to drive the fast-growing EV sector.«
