Magna has received an order from Mercedes-Benz to manufacture a hybrid dual-clutch transmission (HDT) for the next generation of compact and mid-size cars. The supplier sees this as confirmation that hybrid technologies are crucial on the road to electrification.
»This order is the result of many years of cooperation with Mercedes-Benz and their confidence in our transmission technology competencies. The order underscores the importance of a diverse powertrain portfolio in the transition to electrification,« said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna's Chief Executive Officer.
Magna's particular expertise in powertrain is in bringing power to the wheels, regardless of the source of propulsion. The company can supply both traditional products and electrified components and systems for automakers transitioning their vehicle offerings to hybrid and electric vehicles.
Two additional HDT programs with global automakers will launch in the coming months, further expanding Magna's foothold in electrified powertrains. Magna sees the shift to hybrid-electric dual-clutch transmissions as a guarantee for long-term stability in the transmission business.
