DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK: Nevertheless Qualcomm has to look for new businesses…

Dr. Jacobs: Of course, you always have to feed the pipeline with new opportunities, even if things come out and you are earning money. The opportunities out there are spectacular, have a look on Medical, Automotive or Education, everything is impacted. And we have still not a full feel how this will go because we are just on the early years. But the companies will change.

DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK: You mentioned the pending NXP acquisition. The last, last, last deadline is July 25th, otherwise the deal will fail. Do you think it will be successful at the end oft he day? Will the chines authorities agree?

Dr. Jacobs: I only read what you write (laughing). It’s hard to tell, it seems to go in this direction now, but the US-Chinese relationchip is one day up and one day down. It took us 9 years to enter the chinese market by the way due to the political situation, but now it’s a great business for us. My concern is that the US and Europe are not running fast enough any more, and the Chinese are running pretty hard, we have a different government system which should give us an advantage, but you also have to make sure to do these investments, the proper investments at this time.

„Governmentral support was a major factor for starting my companies“

DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK: The subsidizing system in Asia is tremendous compared with Europe and I guess also with the US. Why does the microelectronics industry in western countries not receive sufficient governmentral support?

Dr. Jacobs: This is interesting to observe, and I think the Chinese are doing a good job identifying areas. But if you remember the 80’s the Japanese did the same thing, put a lot of money in certain areas and it didn’t work out, it was a kind of failure. So it is very important to keep individual Entrepeneurs thinking about things and coming out with great ideas.

Unfortunately we cut back some of the support for universities, and governmentral support was a major factor for starting my companies Linkabit and Qualcomm. You can ease back in existing areas, but you must put your energy in new areas. These public investments are crucial. The research universities in the US are doing very well, but they do depend on private and also public funding. The UCSD was starting three new campusses in one year, which is fantastic, but then they stopped any support, which is crazy!

DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK: (laughing) Is anything else crazy regarding politics?

Dr. Jacobs: Of course, the immigration situation is also crazy. People come to the US for getting educated, this happens, and after that they receive a green card whatever it takes. That makes no sense either.

DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK: Dr. Jacobs, thank you very much for your valuable time and giving me the opportunity to talk to you! We wish your wife, your family and yourself all the best.

Dr. Jacobs: Frank, it was a pleasure ! I thank you !
