The module, called ‘TRIA SM2S-G3E’, is based on the newly introduced RZ/G3E microprocessor from Renesas, which features up to four Arm Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz, a dedicated Arm Cortex-M33 real G3E microprocessor, which is equipped with up to four Arm Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8 GHz, a dedicated Arm Cortex-M33 real-time core and an Arm Ethos-U55 neural processing unit (NPU). It is particularly suitable for applications that require a compact computing platform with extensive graphics, video and AI capabilities as well as I/Os. The RZ/G3E features the Arm Mali-G52 graphics processing unit (GPU) and a 4K-capable video processing unit (VPU) as well as extensive security features. The microprocessor can execute AI workloads with its NPU, a new type of processor for machine learning (ML) that was specifically developed to accelerate ML inference in embedded and IoT systems with limited space. Other features include up to 8 GB of fast LPDDR4 memory with inline ECC and up to 256 GB of eMMC flash, as well as LVDS, MIPI DSI and HDMI interface options. In addition, the module offers high-speed interfaces such as PCIe Gen.3 x2/x1, USB 3.2 Gen 2 x 1 and dual Gigabit Ethernet.

‘Our RZ/G3E is a new class of universal MPUs designed for cost-effective, secure edge computing applications beyond traditional HMI applications, featuring seamless cloud integration and fast data connectivity (5G),’ explains Daryl Khoo, Vice President of Embedded Processing at Renesas. ‘In addition, the processor can independently execute AI/ML workloads, which has become an increasingly common requirement.’
