The physical layer standard Ethernet-APL is now also integrated in the Industrial Ethernet technology Profinet: Profinet devices can use Ethernet-APL as a physical communication layer (medium) for data transmission in the field level of process plants.
Because Profinet is media-independent, it can use classic copper CAT cables, fibre optic cables, WLAN and thus also Ethernet-APL, which can be regarded as another medium. In this way, all the properties and advantages of Profinet are available on the Ethernet APL medium (physical layer).
From next year, it will be possible to certify Profinet devices for Ethernet-APL. "With the integration of Ethernet-APL and the new version 4.0 of the process automation profile, Profinet now also covers those process automation applications that were previously reserved for Profibus in its version Profibus PA," explains Karsten Schneider, board chairman of Profibus & Profinet International (PI).
