In view of the Hannover Messe, the organiser Deutsche Messe AG has announced the Hermes Award industry prize - this year for the twentieth time. For the first time, the Hermes Startup Award was officially announced alongside the Hermes Award.

Companies and institutions participating in the Hannover Messe can apply for the Hermes Award until February 15th. The prize will be presented by the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, on April 16th during the opening ceremony of the Hannover Messe.

An independent jury of experts from politics, business, research and society, chaired by the President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reimund Neugebauer, will nominate three products each for the Hermes Award and the Hermes Startup Award and select the respective winner from this group. The criteria of technological innovation, benefit for industry, the environment and society, as well as economic viability and readiness for implementation will play the main role in the assessment of prize-worthiness.

Every year, Deutsche Messe AG presents the Hermes Award to a company whose product or solution demonstrates a particularly high degree of technological innovation. Only those technology solutions which have already been proven in industrial practice are considered.

The Hermes Award 2022 went to Sumitomo Cyclo Drive Germany. The company was honoured for a completely integrated drive for robot applications and automation technology. The gearbox, the motor and the driver with safety functions are new. Because of its sensor technology and thermal management, the product is suitable for precise sensitive applications in service robotics as well as for interaction with humans. The modular concept and the modular systems enable an application-specific configuration of the necessary hardware. The product, called "Tuaka", is suitable for applications in the rapidly growing robotics market.

Already in the past two years, the Hermes Award jury made use of the possibility to award a special prize and honoured one company each time with the Hermes Startup Award as a special prize. In 2022, the Hermes Startup Award went to MIP Technology from Hanover. The award-winning project is a magnetic identification solution as an alternative to optically readable codes and RFID tags.

This time, the main theme of Hannover Messe is "Industrial Transformation - Making the Difference". It is intended to link the exhibition areas Automation, Motion & Drives, Digital Ecosystems, Energy Solutions, Engineered Parts & Solutions, Future Hub, Compressed Air & Vacuum and Global Business & Markets. Topics at the show include CO2-neutral production, artificial intelligence & machine learning, Industry 4.0, energy management and hydrogen and fuel cells. Conferences and forums complement the programme. The 2023 edition will be held in Hannover from April 17th to 21th. The partner country in 2023 is Indonesia.
