The EU GDPR is now fully applicable. However, two-thirds of companies see data protection rules as obstacles to innovation, according to a Bitkom survey.
From artificial intelligence to individual medicine: Many companies and organizations are currently examining how digital technologies can help them develop new services and become more competitive. They then see many hurdles in the specific application - especially due to data protection requirements. Almost two thirds of companies in Germany (63 percent) say this. That makes data protection the most frequently mentioned obstacle to the use of new technologies. This is the result of a representative survey of more than 600 companies that was conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. "Data protection rules must not become an obstacle to meaningful and necessary innovations," says Bitkom President Achim Berg.
"New technologies such as artificial intelligence will form the basis of our economic performance and social prosperity in the future. Companies must be committed to high data protection standards, but they must not overstep the mark." Against this background, the effects of the new basic data protection regulation would also have to be closely monitored in order to be improved by the authorities if necessary. Berg: "It is important to reconcile the protection of personal information with useful, data-based applications and services.
Trade in particular perceives data protection requirements as an obstacle to the use of new technologies. Four out of five retail companies (80 percent) report this. At 57 percent, data protection is also the most frequently mentioned hurdle in industry; in the service sector, more than half (53 percent) of companies have problems with data protection requirements if new technologies are to be used.
Methodological note: The data are based on a survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of Bitkom. 606 companies in all industries with 20 or more employees in Germany were surveyed. The survey is representative.
