The communications technology supplier Atlantik Elektronik in Planegg near Munich is focusing on 5G mobile communications: under the umbrella of "Atlantik 5G Haus", the company is bundling its own expertise with that of its partners to support customers in the 5G field.
As a sign of its expertise in 5G, Atlantik Elektronik is relying on its many years of experience in designing wireless embedded systems. The company's project managers, FAEs and antenna/HF experts work together with customers to develop suitable solutions, ensure that they are implemented in a targeted manner and coordinate cooperation with partners around the world to provide complete solutions. These include hardware and software including development services and everything else necessary for the successful development of 5G products. This includes antenna design, sensors and cameras, connectivity and cloud solutions, test and measurement equipment and training.
The main component for a 5G-capable design is the communication electronics. Atlantik Elektronik relies on its partnership with Qualcomm and its 5G solutions such as the single-chip multimode modem "Snapdragon X55", which supports mobile communications from 5G down to 2G. The 5G modem RF system offers virtually any combination of 5G spectral bands and modes: 5G mmWave and sub-6 GHz, standalone and non-standalone modes, TDD and FDD, and spectrum sharing.
"Because very few products are designed for sufficiently large quantities to allow integration of 5G via chipsets, modular solutions are used in most cases", explains Ottmar Flach, Managing Partner of Atlantik Elektronik. The company's main partners in this area are Quectel, supplier of mobile radio and GNSS modules, and Thundercomm, supplier of IoT and edge computing products and techniques and algorithms for 5G and artificial intelligence. The radio modules used achieve up to 7 Gbit/s in download with 4x4 MIMO technology and support all bands worldwide. They are connected to host processors via high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, USB 3.1 or 10 Gbit/s Ethernet. Atlantik Elektronik offers solutions from Qualcomm (Snapdragon), NXP (i.MX8), Intel and Rockchip.
For the radio link, suitable antennas and antenna design services are offered by our partners Antenova (for embedded antennas) and Panorama Antennas (for external antennas). In addition to a standard portfolio, adapted or completely newly developed antennas are also possible.
With regard to the necessary connectivity, Atlantik Elektronik is a partner of Deutsche Telekom for IoT and M2M communication. Together, projects can be realized for campus networks as well as for the public 5G network. Communication can take place either via the "Telekom Cloud of Things" or via other common cloud systems.
The first entry-level product of the "Atlantic 5G House" is an M.2-capable Raspberry Pi-HAT (Hardware Attached on Top), which is compatible with Quectel's LTE Advanced and 5G modules. Other development kits are available, including those from Quectel and Thundercomm, as well as proprietary kits such as the "Atlantic 5G HMI Kit", which connects the Rockchip RK3228 CPU to a 5G modem and 10.1-inch touch display. In addition, various reference designs are available, such as for customer premise equipment, for Mi-Fi (5G to Wi-Fi hotspot router) and for edge computing (Snapdragon 845/865 + Snapdragon X55) as well as kits for the development of Snapdragon-based AI applications (with SNPE - Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine). The designs can be adapted or purchased directly as white label products.
