High-precision images with the lowest possible radiation dose - that is the eternal vision of patients, radiologists and medical device manufacturers. The basis for this are CT and X-ray sensors that are reliable and powerful. They enable more precise medical diagnoses and increase the diagnostic value through sharper images. The Austrian-German sensor technology group ams Osram wants to become the global innovation leader for medical imaging and has opened a new design center in Valencia for this purpose.

Sensors for Medical Imaging and OEMs

The development center in the iconic building at Calle de Colon 60 in the heart of the eastern Spanish port city will be the cornerstone for technologies such as CT and X-ray sensors, which enable medical device OEMs to create high-precision images with minimal radiation doses. With the relocation of the site, which has been in existence since 2008, the sensor technology group not only aims to strengthen innovation and development through cooperation, but also to establish itself as a top employer for development engineers in the region.

With advanced technology for computed tomography (CT) and digital X-ray, ams OSRAM has positioned itself well in medical and industrial imaging in recent years. Jens Milnikel, Executive Vice President of ams OSRAM, says:

»The opening of our new Design Center in Valencia is an important milestone for us on our way to becoming an innovation leader in the field of medical imaging technology.«

»Our goal is to attract the best design engineers in the region by offering them growth and development opportunities in a dynamic, technologically advanced environment,« added Rafael Serrano-Gotarredonda, Director of Engineering for Medical Imaging at ams Osram. The expansion of the Design Center in Valencia is an expression of the local commitment and offers opportunities for both graduates and professionals with work experience.

Cooperation with local universities is a key pillar of the sensor manufacturer. As part of the partnership with the University of Valencia (UV) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), ams Osram co-finances various microelectronics programs supported by the Spanish Chip Law. According to Serrano-Gotarredonda, ams Osram will participate in university training programs and R&D projects that will benefit both industry and academia. (uh)
