In the first quarter of 2019, »the sector is weakening«, according to the AMA Association. After the record year 2018 with ten percent sales growth, the new year began with a minus of one percent compared to the previous quarter. According to the association, however, incoming orders were stable with a plus of one percent compared to the previous quarter.
AMA Managing Director Dr. Thomas Simmons explains the reason for this weakness in the weakening economy of the two major growth drivers mechanical engineering and automotive: »If the order situation in mechanical engineering deteriorates, sensor and measurement technology will be affected with a time lag«. Most AMA members supply the mechanical engineering sector and about one third the automotive industry.
The number of orders of these two main customers will hardly improve within the next few months, according to the forecast of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Nevertheless, the AMA members remain cautiously optimistic and expect sales growth of four percent for the second quarter. In addition to the core mechanical engineering and automotive markets, sensors are used in a large number of user industries.
