Lapp The Cable Drum Becomes Intelligent

Bei der Hannover Messe 2019 präsentieren Lapp und Schildknecht gemeinsam die intelligente Kabeltrommel.

In cooperation with Schildknecht, Lapp has developed the intelligent cable drum "Smart Cable Drum" - to be seen for the first time at the Hanover Trade Fair.

Equipped with a sensor and electronics with radio transmission, the intelligent cable drum determines the current cable inventory and transmits it to a data portal in a cloud via the company network or a globally active 2G-4G mobile radio technology.

"We want to help our customers make industry 4.0 a reality in their company. The intelligent cable drum helps digitize inventory management. The stock can thus be precisely aligned to the actual demand. This saves costs and storage capacity," explains Ralf Moebus, Product Manager for Industrial Data Communication at Lapp.

"The Smart Cable Drum combines user benefits and innovative technology in a IIoT business model of the future," explains Elena Eberhardt, Business Development Manager at Schildknecht. "Robust and cost-effective sensors with Bluetooth 5 or mobile radio technology can replace normal cable drums with intelligent ones. Above all, the eSIM card with worldwide availability makes international use easy. Together with the appropriate cloud solution, the system is quickly scalable for different applications because standard interfaces such as RESTful API are available".

This should result in several advantages for the user: The Smart Cable Drum helps to automate inventory management in the warehouse. The information from the intelligent cable drum can be transmitted directly to Lapp or alternatively via the company's internal network. In this way, inventories can be reduced by making information on cable inventories and the current location of the cable reel available at any time via a cloud. A further application advantage is the integrated theft protection through an optional built-in GPS module, which provides information about the current location of the Smart Cable Drum. This enables cable theft to be detected and prevented at an early stage by sending a warning in the event of unusual consumption activities.

New business models are also conceivable: One possibility, according to the company, would be for Lapp to make the cable drums available to its customers as commission goods in the form of pay-per-use and to bill consumption according to the values determined using Smart Cable Drum technology, while at the same time ensuring timely subsequent delivery.
