Internet of Things Smart Beehive Scale with Raspberry Pi

Within the scope of a project of the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Karlsruhe four students developed HoneyPi, a smart beehive scale to build by yourself. All projects had to be based on a Raspberry Pi, be connected to the internet, and implement a man-machine interface.

HoneyPi is a measuring system for smart beekeepers. The beehive scale is based on the Raspberry Pi and was developed by Javan Rasokat, Melissa Spinuzza, Kevin Lauff, and Max Freisler under the direction of lecturer Dennis Schulmeister-Zimolong. HoneyPi was developed as part of a university project on the Internet of Things in the 6th semester of the Business Informatics course at the Duale HochschuleBaden-Wuerttemberg  Karlsruhe. The groups were able to implement their own ideas – as long as they were based on a Raspberry Pi.

Although hive scales are no novelty for beekeepers, the previous systems are very expensive to purchase and operate. On the other hand, the HoneyPi project is intended to offer beekeepers a smart measurement system that they can assemble themselves for less than 100 euros.

The HoneyPi measures temperature, humidity, air pressure, and weight. The data is visualized using the HoneyPi app. This allows beekeepers to retrieve the values from anywhere and see exactly when a swarm of bees is flying out, for example: The swarm alarm is triggered by a weight loss and the beekeeper is notified by e-mail. The incubator temperature can also be monitored. This can be used, for example, to determine whether the beehive is kept sufficiently warm in winter in the winter cluster and whether the colony still has brood.

The measuring station can be operated independently at the apiary with a solar panel and a battery. In addition, the device can connect to the internet via a surf stick. The measurement data is stored on a central web server so that it can be called up at any time and from anywhere on the smartphone.
