Osram receives approval Short wave UV light for virus removal

The "AirZing" lamps from Osram effectively remove microorganisms such as the Corona virus.

UV-C lamps from Osram can disinfect air and surfaces and effectively remove the corona virus - as demonstrated by their use in hospitals in Wuhan and Beijing.

Osram has now received international approval for its UV-C systems for disinfecting air and surfaces and can therefore supply its "AirZing" products with immediate effect. They remove viruses and bacteria with a reliability of 99.9 percent.
The "AirZing" lights work with UV light of the wavelength 253.7 nm (UV-C) and remove viruses and bacteria with a reliability of 99.9 percent. More than 2,000 of these systems are already in use in hospitals in Wuahn and Beijing. Osram has also supplied 10,000 products to kindergartens in China to date. The Chinese authorities have confirmed their effectiveness against the corona virus.

Osram is installing the "AirZing" luminaires in Kunshan, China. The capacity is up to 35,000 units per month.

"We are working hard to increase the production volume for our UV-C disinfection systems because they can make an important contribution to the fight against the corona virus," said Wilhelm Nehring, CEO of the Digital Business Unit at Osram.
UV light with a wavelength of 253.7 nm has the advantage that no harmful ozone is produced during use, as is the case with UV light with wavelengths of 185 nm (V-UV), for example.

However, UV-C light is invisible and can lead to severe burns on human skin. This is why Osram has equipped its "AirZing PRO" with intelligent sensor technology: An infrared sensor detects people in the room and switches off "AirZing" as soon as someone enters the room unexpectedly. The system thus prevents people from suffering injuries to their eyes and skin from UV light. Therefore, only trained personnel should install and operate "AirZing" products.
