Aviation also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. That is why it should become more environmentally friendly step by step. Siemens and Airbus are setting a good example.

At the Bauhaus aviation symposium »Ambition 2050« from May the 7th to 8th in Taufkirchen, Siemens and Airbus announce their cooperation on hybrid-electric propulsion systems. The symposium brings together representatives of science, industry and politics. The aim is to explore ways of achieving the environmental goals set by the European Union for aviation in its Flightpath 2050 strategy paper. Topics include operational aspects, alternative fuels and alternative propulsion systems.

Airbus will implement the goals in the »E-Aircraft Systems« program in close cooperation with Siemens. »There is no technology that can make air travel emission-free on its own«, explains Glenn Llewellyn of Airbus. However, electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems offer new perspectives. The project team is now investigating the possible applications of such propulsion systems in helicopters, commercial aircrafts and vertical take-off and landing passenger drones.
